What is the best way to back up/save the songs I have on itunes? If I have a hard drive, how do I save them to it?

In finder, browse to your name.
there will be a music folder. All your itunes songs will be in this music folder.
Copy the entire music folder to your external drive. When you get your new computer, copy the music folder back to your profile.
